The social justice event that I attended was at Kwantlen and it was about the trip to Ghana in Africa. The students who made the presentation had experienced the trip for themselves and shared their stories with us. They talked about how the trip affected them, the people you get to meet and how it changed their lives. Each presentation was unique and showed the state Ghana was in and how us helping is important to their country.
There are many reasons as to why going on the Ghana trip would be an eye opening experience. You get to learn about their lifestyle and way of life. All the people who went on this trip had jobs and these jobs would help to make the experience more fulfilling. They got the chance to talk with the people in Ghana, and share their experiences and challenges of their life. These jobs were difficult but according to these students it was different and helped them to interact with the people better. They had to work hard and it changed the way they thought about living here. They saw how they took advantage of the things we have here and how lucky we are to have the opportunities we have. This part of the trip showed gave them an eye opening experience. Also, Ghana has dealt with so much when it comes to stereotypes and their economy. This changed the students thoughts about the country. It is assumed that Ghana, or Africa in general, is a very poor country with no opportunities and famine. According to the students though, Ghana is not just made up of famine and poor people. It also has rich people and nice places to live. It is different compared to Canada, because unfortunately there was many poor people on the streets even with all the rich people around. Ghana has also been known for its bad economy and corruption. Schooling is hard to come across and there are no human rights when it comes to women. The students thought this was surprising because of the time we live in. It also was surprising to the students how the Ghanaian people had such high spirits, and that they looked at the better side of things considering their conditions.
Overall, the presentations were an eye opening for the students but also me. This event changed my way of thinking and made me look at Africa in a different way. This opportunity to travel to Ghana and see what they have seen and experience the different culture and life style would be life changing. It was definitely an amazing event and it helped me understand Ghana more than I did before.
